According to evidence presented in court, two brothers applied to join the Islamic State organization in Afghanistan.
Both Muhammad Hamzah Heyder Khan, 18, and Muhammad Abdul Haleem Heyder Khan, 21, deny planning terrorist attacks. At Birmingham Crown Court, the prosecution said that they developed extreme ideologies in 2022 and intended to fly to Afghanistan to join the organisation.
Last year, they were detained at their Ward End, Birmingham, home. Prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC stated in his opening statement on Wednesday that the two brothers "grew progressively radicalized throughout the course of 2022.
They had planned to go to Afghanistan in order to take part in and support terrorism.
The defendants' preparations included the purchase of clothing and equipment, he continued, adding that the pair intended to join the organization known as the Islamic State Khurasan Province.
It also involved collecting travel documents so they could go to Afghanistan. "It included researching how they might travel to Afghanistan."
When they were detained on November 2, 2022, according to the testimony given in court, police searched their shared bedroom and found phone handsets and a computer tower.
