Travel advisory for Turkey for British tourists as Foreign Office changes guidance

The Foreign Office has updated its advise on safety and security threats, including suggestions against visiting certain regions of the nation.

In new guidance from the UK government, tourists from the UK who are visiting Turkey are advised not to travel to particular regions of the nation.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK has updated its advice on safety and security issues in Turkey, which now includes a travel warning for specific regions.

The FCDO published new travel guidance last week and advised against visiting areas near the Syrian border, including Sirnak, a city in the south of the country, and the Hakkari province.

According to the government agency, "FCDO recommends against all travel within 10 kilometres of the Syrian border. There is still a high risk of terrorism in the area and fighting is still taking place in parts of Syria that are close to the Turkish border. Roads in Hatay province that lead to the border may be closed due to the ongoing fighting in Syria.

"FCDO advises against travelling to Sirnak (city) unless absolutely necessary. FCDO warns against visiting the province of Hakkari unless absolutely necessary. This is because there is a greater threat of terrorism in the area. Take extreme precautions if you must travel to this province.

The FCDO stated that "the safety of British nationals is our main concern" in confirming the new instructions. "We continually review our travel advice for each country or territory to ensure that it includes the most recent data and recommendations on the most crucial issues for British people travelling to or residing there," it continued.

"The updates to each Travel Advice page's terrorism section take into account the reality that there are now more types of terrorism on the world scene than only those motivated by islamist ideas.

"FCDO travel advice offers information to help British nationals make educated choices about travelling abroad, but we cannot enforce it; it is still up to the person whether they feel it is safe for them to do so.

The FCDO further states that "no travel can be guaranteed safe" and advises anyone travelling to Turkey to purchase appropriate travel insurance. Holidaymakers who go against FCDO advise risk having their travel insurance cancelled. Read More
